Discovering old narratives in a modern medium

Joan Rispa is a passionate storyteller who uses film to amplify underrepresented voices and perspectives in society. Her filmmaking career began in college with her award-winning directorial debut ‘Detox’, which gained global recognition at prestigious festivals. Since then, she has embarked on an adventurous journey, creating films on diverse themes from different parts of the world, such as ‘The Herbalist’ in Japan, exploring traditional medicine’s role in the modern world, and ‘Shine’, a Pan-African documentary for Diageo Africa about the uplifting spirit of football fans. Rispa believes in the power of storytelling to change lives and, through her CBO Seeds of Grace, she utilizes film as a medium to raise awareness about intimate partner violence among teenage girls.
